AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG EXPRESSIONS USED IN BROOKLYN NINE-NINE AMERICAN TV SERIES

Abstract

Slang is part of a non-standard language that many people use in daily conversations. However, slang is not only used as a language to communicate and interact but also a part of cultural influence that spreads worldwide, like TV series. The subtitle in TV series is assumed as a primary element in this study as it enables the writer to identify the slang expressions featured in the TV series. In this case, this study focuses on analyses of the types of slang based on combination theories by Allan & Burridge and Yule and the adaptation of idiom translation strategies by Baker used in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine American TV Series. This study used a summative content analysis research method with a qualitative approach. The result showed 50 slang expressions found with five types of slang and two translation strategies affected by those slang expressions. The most dominant type of slang is fresh and creative, followed by clipping, imitative, suffixation, and compounding. The slang translation strategy that appears the most is a translation by paraphrase, followed by translation by omission as the least used one.
